‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ breaks box-office records
“The Force Awakens” was heading toward a Friday take of more than $100 million domestically, said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney.

Disney plans four “Star Wars” movies through 2019, plus major expansions at its US theme parks to incorporate the droids, spaceships and otherworldly creatures of the universe Lucas invented.
“Force Awakens” could become the highest-grossing movie of all time, box office analysts said.
The “Harry Potter” film also holds the all-time record for opening day at $91 million.
It remains to be seen if “The Force Awakens” will top the record $209 million that “Jurassic World” opened with in June.
The highly anticipated movie shatters box office records in its first weekend, including the opening weekend ticket sales of around $238 million from theaters in North America, AceShowbiz reports. Somehow, there’s another sound that is much more relevant to any discussion of the Star Wars phenom.
The long-awaited seventh film in the space saga – “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” – collected a record-smashing $57 million in ticket sales Thursday night in the United States and Canada.
“There are literally millions of tickets available for this weekend, and exhibitors have a lot of flexibility in terms of capacity and increasing the number of shows based on demand”, Dave Hollis, Disney’s head of distribution, said Friday in a statement.
3-D and Imax screenings are helping to propel the record gross. He says he’s intrigued by new movies in the franchise since Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012. You can pick up The Force Awakens play set and additional characters starting today. Whether “The Force Awakens” can come close to the global hauls of those films ($2.8 billion for “Avatar” and $2.2 billion for “Titanic”) won’t be clear for weeks.
The U.S. showings of Disney-Lucasfilm’s “The Force Awakens“, directed by J.J. Abrams, began at 7 p.m. following months of a massive marketing build-up by Disney.
Filmgoers reveled in the return to the “Star Wars” galaxy, dressing as Jedi or Sith, carrying lightsabers and cheering when classic characters such as Princess Leia or Chewbacca appeared on screen.

But so far, “The Force Awakens” is attracting the interest of seemingly everyone.
