“England will also face Russian Federation and Slovakia during the finals in France and the former Fulham boss is equally concerned by the talents of those two sides, who also secured automatic qualification for the tournament”.
Antonio Conte’s side will open up their campaign against Belgium on the 13th June, four days later Italy face Sweden and the Republic of Ireland on the 22nd June.
“We have actually beaten the world champions so we’ll get some confidence from that”, added O’Neill, whose side finished third in qualifying Group D but made it to France thanks to a two-legged play-off success against Bosnia-Herzegovina in November.
“I pleased it’s not the first game, it’s new territory for us but at least we can have a little taste of it because we know if England hit all the right notes they have the capacity to beat anybody”.
“Two good teams, obviously, and for them to win 10 games in their qualifying was fantastic”.
“The Ukrainians are a bit more unknown to us but I think one of the real strong points of our preparation has always been our level of detail on the opposition”. “It would be extraordinary”, said Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque, who can look forward to a rematch with Croatia after narrowly beating them at Euro 2012.
The hosts France being placed in Group A along with Romania, Albania and Switzerland. “I think it’s great – he’ll also keep the same role in the England team, so we don’t lose him and I think we can only benefit”.
No specific target has been set – it is thought that reaching the quarter-finals with England viewed as playing good football would be viewed as enough progress, especially coming from the low base of the disappointment of last year’s World Cup humiliation and elimination after just two matches.
“He should have one more tournament after this to take this young group though to the World Cup finals”.
“I’m sure any other country will not want be looking forward to facing us”. They have to be on top form from the start, so regarding motivation we could not have a better first opponent than Italy.
“A lot can change in the six months leading up to the tournament, players can hit form or lose form so I wouldn’t be too stressed about any individuals at this stage”.

Despite a subsequent 2-1 win over Bulgaria, Italy were left third in Group C and on their way home as Sweden and Denmark, who drew their final game 2-2, advanced due to a better head-to-head record.
