Beckham has been suspended one game by the National Football League for his actions during the game, including an ugly helmet-to-helmet cheap shot. The most notable of the penalties came on a helmet-to-helmet collision with Norman despite the play occurring on the opposite side of the field.
The National Hockey League has suspended Boston Bruins forward Max Talbot for two games for interference against New Jersey Devils forward Jiri Tlusty on Sunday. That’s a failure of Panthers coach Ron Rivera and the game officials to allow that around high-strung athletes. Coughlin failed to do it from the sideline. The suspension is for “multiple violations of safety-related playing rules”.
Beckham can not play in Sunday’s game against the Vikings.
Through Newton’s exploits, Panthers have shocked the world by becoming only the fourth team in National Football League history to start 14-0, joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the 2007 New England Patriots and the 2009 Indianapolis Colts. And while Panthers cornerback Josh Norman had a huge part in the skirmishes, and was the instigator even during pregame warm-ups with the baseball bat antics and verbal threats, the way the combustible wideout handled himself will warrant any punitive actions. With their season hanging by the thinnest of threads, the Giants want desperately to have their most talented offensive player on the field.
With the top seed in the NFC still up for grabs, Rivera is more focused on the Panthers’ recent struggles to close out games. But what fans got was one immature, violent act after another. They were going to try to end his career.
It’s no surprise that Coach Tom Coughlin let his loose cannon remain in the game and swat at Norman, he wanted to win the game, he wasn’t about to take out his best “weapon” on offense and the general knew who he sent in for the mission.
Florio said Coughlin’s job security – or lack thereof – could’ve been a factor in letting Beckham play. It’s not about the individual, it’s about the team.
“I got a problem with nobody going to grab him”, Lewis said. “He has great energy, great enthusiasm”. But I will defend the young man, and the quality of the person.
“I will not defend his actions yesterday”, the coach said, “because they were wrong and this particular franchise and organization does not tolerate that, so I would not do that”.
Manning was similarly backed into Beckham’s corner. I have to say, he’s my favorite. Now, I don’t think he felt threatened for his life. “And he’s played on a second straight bad team”.
Eli also added Odell’s got “learn his lesson” and “control his emotions”. In the interview with ESPN Radio, Norman said he was happy Beckham was likely to be suspended and said the Giants receiver should have been ejected for his helmet to helmet hit, which forced Norman to undergo testing for a concussion, which he passed and was able to stay in the game.
No doubt Manning would support that.

“It made me sick watching that yesterday”, Francesa said as he went to break. He would give me a sweet epic battle, but that right there was a melee. But then Beckham spent the first three quarters trying to get even. On the second series, he stopped short on his route when the ball went another way and lowered his shoulder into Norman with great force.
