Air France flight diverted after suspicious device found in bathroom

Frédéric Gagey, the CEO of Air France, said the device was made of cardboard, paper, and a household timer, and that “this object did not contain explosives”, from a news conference in Paris. Last year, the USA warned that terrorists were plotting to use new stealth bombs in laptops and even humans to bring down a US-bound passenger plane.

However, French media outlet iTELE reports that the suspicious package found on flight AF463 was a “dummy bomb”.

The passengers were successful evacuated and booked at various hotels in Mombasa waiting to be transferred to their destinations.

Air France has been the target of three prior hoaxes, all in the United States, Gagey said. He declined to describe it as a fake bomb, but said it was a “homemade assembly of cardboard and a kitchen timer mechanism”.

One of those on board, Benoit Lucchini, said passengers were calm and were told by the crew that the plane was being diverted because of a technical problem.

“Bomb experts from the Navy and DCI (Directorate of Criminal Investigations) have retrieved the device and are determining whether the components contained explosives”, Mr Boinnet said. The Boeing 777, with more than 470 people on board, had been checked before take-off, Air France said.

“They are speaking to the passengers… who were near where the device was”, Nkaissery said.
