The plan, then, is to film three films back-to-back-to-back, and release them one year after another. We know its been very important to him to make three movies that work together as parts of a larger story. All of the creatures, landscapes and new worlds have been created, and the writing is almost completed. Technical development is done. This raises the billion dollar question of whether Avatar will be able to find an audience nearly a decade after it brought the worldwide box office to its knees, but even if it doesn’t emulate the original, Cameron needs to cook up something special to maintain excitement across the entire trilogy.
Eager to prove to himself and the world that “it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time”, James Cameron has been taking his sweet time with the trio of “Avatar” sequels he’s got cooking up.
Avatar 2 is scheduled to be released in December 2017, with Avatar 3 in December 2018, and Avatar 4 in December 2019. It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver.

Once the afterglow from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has faded a little, it’ll be time to look forward to the other franchises coming out in the next few years, not least of which is the follow-up to James Cameron’s Avatar. He’s writing the three sequels with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno, respectively. And now, “Avatar 2” will soon see the light of day. Obviously a lot has happened on the big-budget blockbuster scene since Avatar first hit back on December 18, 2009. Consequently, the enormous influx of sequels set to be unleashed in two years does face the danger of having to court an audience that might haved already moved on from the grandiose greenery of Pandora.
