Smoltz replaces Reynolds and Verducci alongside Fox’s Buck
Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci are being moved off of Fox’s marquee broadcasting team with Joe Buck and will be replaced by John Smoltz, according to a report in the New York Daily News. The changes could cause a few awkward moments when the season begins because Reynolds, Verducci and Smoltz all continue to work for MLB Network as well. An official announcement is expected later on Tuesday. It’s also refreshing to see Fox abandon the three-man booth, which seemed overly crowded over the past two seasons.

When Fox’s coverage of Game 1 of this year’s World Series between the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets cut out due to power loss in the broadcast truck, USA viewers were switched over to the MLB International feed, which featured Smoltz as commentator alongside play-by-play man Matt Vasgersian.
He is the first Hall of Fame pitcher to have comeback from Tommy John surgery and he dedicated part of his induction speech to encouraging parents not to wear out the arms of their children at such young ages through year-round baseball. He and Buck will be the network’s top baseball broadcast duo. Darling remains under contract with SNY, TBS and MLB Network.
And SNY’s Keith Hernandez isn’t considered a candidate for the job even though his current contract is expiring.

Verducci and Reynolds will likely have a role in Fox’s coverage, but the specifics have not yet been determined, and could include studio work or other reporting.
