Serena Williams named SI’s Sportsperson of Year
Williams was ranked number one every week for the second consecutive year, and her three successive grand slam wins to start 2015 lifted her within one of Steffi Graf’s record 22 singles titles in the professional era.

Serena Williams, the most dominant person in the sport of tennis, has won Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year award. But I believe that a horse should not win Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsperson of the Year” award.
“As I always say, it takes a village it’s not just one person“, she said. “This is not just an accomplishment for me, but for my whole team, I am beyond honoured”. “I am beyond honored”, she said, according to Sports Illustrated.
Meanwhile, American Pharoah, the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown, was the victor from the magazine’s online poll, taking 47%. The horsey crowd was outraged.
Likewise, Sports Illustrated has used Serena as a jumping off point to rename what was the “Sportsman of the Year”, “Sportsperson of the Year”.
Are fans right in protesting (see tweets below) that a horse should have won the prestigious award? She held all four Grand Slam titles at once: 2014 U.S. Open, 2015 Australian Open, 2015 French Open, and 2015 Wimbledon. Williams is also the first active tennis player to be named since Chris Evert earned the title in 1976. By the way, the same poll was taken by Sports Illustrated and believe it or not, American Pharaoh was the favorite.
By winning, Williams joins a list of past winners that includes Peyton Manning, LeBron James, Derek Jeter, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, and Mary Decker – the last individual woman who won. But that’s not the sole reason why we arrive, now, at this honor.

But millions of human beings do know about the award and they are pissed that American Pharoah didn’t come out on top this time.
