Timelapse highlights as Tim Peake assists on space walk
There have been British astronauts in the past, but they either held dual citizenship or worked for NASA.

The robotic cargo ship, called Progress 62, is scheduled to launch toward the space station from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Monday at 3:44 a.m. EST (0833 GMT).
The rail car’s brake was thought to have become stuck unexpectedly last week after it moved around four inches (10cm) from its starting point.
Finished with their work, the astronauts returned inside the space station more than three hours after the start of their spacewalk.
If all goes according to plan, this would take place less than a week after he arrived at the space station, also becoming the first astronaut to live there.
He said that the space station management team will be meeting on Sunday, December 20 to decide whether to go ahead with the spacewalk on Monday or delay it until Tuesday.
“He will be with us around the Christmas festive table as a giant cardboard cut-out which the people in the village very kindly made for the celebration party they had on launch day”, said Mr Peake. Kelly will be designated Extravehicular Activity crew member 1 (EV1) wearing the suit bearing the red stripes, and Kopra will be Extravehicular Activity crew member 2 (EV2) wearing the suit with no stripes.
Atmospheric conditions aboard the space station are not dissimilar to those on Earth, he said, with the same temperature, pressure and humidity, but 10 times the level of carbon dioxide. However, the crew of the spacecraft had to dock with the ISS manually due to a failure in the automated guidance control system. And ever since then, several Brits with dual citizenship have gone into space as part of other nations’ space programs, or as an element of privately-funded missions.
The 43-year-old settled into life in space with some Earthly comforts – tea and a bacon sandwich – and described his first hour and 48 minutes aboard the ISS as “busy but incredible”.

After engineers on the ground confirmed the rail vehicle was latched in place, Hopkins told the spacewalkers, “It’s in a good config”.
