SpaceX reusable rocket is the biggest Christmas gift for space enthusiasts
The company has tried twice before to land a rocket, without success (see “SpaceX Claims Partial Success with Rocket Crash Landing”). Musk says the move would drastically reduce launch costs. The Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO took to Twitter to highlight the importance of achieving orbit after Blue Origin’s successful landing. According to the Associated Press, this “was the first time an unmanned rocket returned to land vertically at Cape Canaveral”.

“I still can’t quite believe it”, Musk said in a teleconference after the landing. The first stage of the rocket then fired three “boostback burns” to realign with the Earth and make its way back to the landing pad.
As the heads of the two firms trade barbs, a new, privately-funded space race seems to be developing as companies rush to corner both the market for satellite launches and eventually manned commercial flights.
The successful launch also marked SpaceX’s return after its last rocket exploded during takeoff on June 28.
The rocket reached a height of 125 miles before heading back to Earth and touching down at a former U.S. Air Force rocket and missile testing range that was last used in 1978.
“It’s a revolutionary moment”, Musk later told reporters.
A handout picture made available by SpaceX shows its Falcon 9 rocket after it had landed at Cape Canaveral on Monday night.
SpaceX is aiming to revolutionise the rocket industry, which up until now has lost millions of dollars in discarded machinery and valuable rocket parts after each launch.
Now, the company will focus on perfecting landings, Musk said.

But the landing SpaceX pulled off was far more hard. Much like how this year started with a mission for NASA, SpaceX will begin 2016 delivering a payload for the space agency. As the rocket came to rest on its landing pad, a SpaceX webcast commentator confirmed, “The Falcon has landed”, drawing an eruption of applause from those gathered at the based private space flight company’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California.
