A USA grand jury says it will not indict anyone in connection with the mysterious death of an African American in a Texas jail cell in July.

“There are other issues the grand jury is still considering”, Jordan added, emphasizing that charges could still be pressed against the trooper who pulled Bland over.

Reed-Veal couldn’t be reached for comment on the grand jury’s decision late Monday.

Bland’s death was ruled a suicide, although family members and activists challenged that conclusion. She was found hanging in her cell with a plastic trash bag around her neck. Three days later, she was found dead in her cell. “We would love to speak with the family”, a special prosecutor said.

Since first pulling over Bland last summer, Texas state trooper Brian Encinia has remained on paid desk duty.

Bland reportedly confessed to jailers that she had attempted to commit suicide in the past, leading some to question why these revelations did not prompt a suicide watch.

On July 10, Bland was stopped for a routine traffic violation.

Jordan said Monday – during a lunch break from presenting evidence to the Waller County grand jury just west of Houston – that he could not speculate on when proceedings might draw to a close.

In the days after her death, county authorities released video from the jail to dispel rumors and conspiracy theories that Bland was dead before she arrived at the jail or was killed while in custody. Cannon Lambert dismissed the grand jury as “a political tool of the prosecutor”.

Lambert said the family is also frustrated by unconfirmed reports that the grand jury would be coming to a conclusion in the case soon. Bland has her mugshot taken, and she can be seen making a phone call. She has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit, which is set to go to trial in January 2017.

“The timing of the grand jury, in my personal opinion, is disrespectful to the family and it continues to pour salt on a wound that has already been ripped open for the past five months”, she said.
