When the numbers first were coming in, it appeared that The Force Awakens had also fallen short on the grand total worldwide opening box office record, but it has since slipped past Jurassic World’s mark on that one as well.
They were so great, in fact, that it managed to topple the record previously held by “Jurassic World”. Internationally, Force Awakens earned another $41.7 million on Monday – including the biggest Monday ever in the U.K./Ireland ($8.8 million) and France ($4.4 million) – for a foreign cume of $322.7 million.
In June, “Jurassic World” set a record for the biggest North American debut of all time by grossing $209 million, beating out previous record holder “The Avengers”.
The figure does not include box office receipts from India or Greece where the movie opens this week, or from China where it opens on 9 January. In Ireland it broke the record for the biggest single day in ticket sales, earning $910,140 (€836,845) on its opening day. “Jurassic World” took $208.8 million at domestic theatres in its first weekend.
Abrams’ sequel, set 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, features a strong female heroine in Rey, a young scavenger played by newcomer Daisy Ridley.

“The industry is expecting incredible holds this upcoming weekend and through the holidays, and if that happens, “Avatar” and its records may be the next thing to fall in the face of the power of the force”. Tracking bears this out, putting the movie ahead of all other Christmas openers/widenings, with as much as a solid $25 million weekend. Though, the fattest check was already paid out to its biggest star: Harrison Ford. From cameos to nods to the Expanded Universe (yes, really!) and a few major hints about the future of the franchise, these are the best secrets which Star Wars: The Force Awakens has so far revealed to us.
