‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Earns $529 Million Globally During Opening Weekend
Earlier this year, Jurassic World stormed the global box office in its opening weekend taking $525 million – breaking the record previously held by Avengers. It achieved the widest December release in history by being screened in 4,134 theaters in North America, biggest single day and biggest opening day with $120.5 million in revenue, and biggest Imax bow with $30.1 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens collected $238 million in USA and Canadian ticket sales, topping the $208.8 million hauled in by Universal Studios’ Jurassic World in June, market researcher Rentrak Corp. said in a statement on Sunday. The Christmas day record will most definitely also fall, currently $24.6 million (Sherlock Holmes), and that’s about it for now (the very near future).

When ET beat Star Wars in film rentals Lucas did the same thing, his advert showing Han Solo and Luke Skywalker holding the beloved alien aloft; when Star Warsfilms took back the top spot, Spielberg published an ad with ET crowning RT.
So when they finally made the decision to kill Han Solo, it was considered a massive trade off. Abrams said during pre-production he asked, “How can we possibly do that!?”
This news actually makes a lot of sense; during the film, Dameron at one point is presumed dead and disappears for a considerable part of the movie before reappearing with little explanation. It earned only $14 million. The previous best for each was also set in 2013 with $1.719 billion domestic and $3.013 billion worldwide. But that’s still way down compared to the last one, $23.2 million (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked in 2011).
It goes without saying that there are obviously MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD for the movie… The Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” landed in third place with $13.4 million. Didn’t think I would like the new characters, love the new characters.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 dropped to fourth place in its fifth weekend. That film’s domestic total is at $87.82 million.
