Cisco Spark Changes the Game in Collaboration
Those tools are messaging, meeting and calling.

The evolved Cisco Spark is billed as a cloud-based business collaboration service that enables customers to message, meet and call anyone, anywhere and anytime, and is largely the brainchild of Jonathan Rosenberg, lead author and co-inventor of the Session Initiation Protocol and former chief technologist for Skype. With a swipe, they can move a video call from a room system to their mobile phone and then to another room.
While Spark the Service offers three key components or workloads from the cloud, Daniels said that the company differentiates the product as one experience and one offer; although, the company will allow customers to pick and choose some services. Now, business users can access their work phone via the cloud, so you no longer need to be at your desk to answer work-related calls that go to your office number.
For example, let’s look at what Cisco Spark Hybrid Services does when you place a call from a Cisco IP phone.
“With a single click you can turn a phone call into a video meeting”, the December 8 press release said. Cisco Spark Hybrid Services enables entirely new and wonderful experiences by connecting this equipment to the cloud. Spark Hybrid services will roll out in 21 nations early in the first quarter of 2016. Reports claim that the upgraded version of Spark will include features like video-conferencing as well as core features of a phone system. The service is designed for secure collaboration using a single platform rather than unconnected tools for team messaging, virtual meetings and phone calls.
Availability and Pricing Cisco Spark for Developers and select services of Cisco Spark are available today. The Spark service doesn’t include a public switched telephone network (PSTN), which users will still get via their service providers. The news exposes a breadth of new opportunities for Cisco collaboration partners, who will be the vendor’s key route to market. He sees the collaboration business growing 9% in fiscal 2016 vs. 7% in ’15, following two years of 6% declines.
Cisco has also long sold conference-room equipment and back-end devices for video conferencing, some of which descended from its 2010 purchase of the Norwegian company Tandberg ASA for $3.3 billion. A listing of Cisco’s trademarks can be found at www.cisco.com/go/trademarks.

This is not to say that Cisco is declaring itself a public service carrier, Daniels pointed out. Could this pivot towards offering voice and video communications directly to the consumer help Cisco maintain its dominance in the telecommunications sector?
