The spacewalk to move the stalled auto to a different location along the space station’s exterior had been expected to take 3.5 hours but ended up only taking 15 minutes, mission commentator Rob Navias, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, told Reuters.

After the astronauts moved the rail auto, they routed cables to prepare for a new docking adapter for commercial cargo ships.

The US space agency announced last week that an unplanned spacewalk would likely be necessary, and mission managers decided after meeting Sunday to go ahead with the outing on Monday. “I hit it twice, I think that fixed it. That was pretty easy”.

“It’s moving now”, Kelly said while conducting repairs.

Finished with their work, the astronauts returned inside the space station more than three hours after the start of their spacewalk. He will be assisting Kopra and Kelly out of the airlock while coordinating with mission control. The outing begins at 1.10pm United Kingdom time. On board will be spacecraft commander Anatoly Ivanishin, Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi and NASA astronaut Kate Rubins. The crew is scheduled to stay aboard the ISS for seven months, meaning they would likely have to wait to catch “Episode VII” on DVD, a true bummer for any real-life space explorer.
