Playoff hopes for Jets in hands of ‘football gods’
The Steelers, who have won five of six, are one of three teams competing for two wild-card slots in the AFC, with the Kansas City Chiefs (9-5) and the New York Jets (9-5) being the other two.

That’s the reality Todd Bowles and his players are facing, knowing they have no control over their postseason destiny. Both teams are 9-5 and would hold a tiebreaker over the Broncos; meaning, one of them has to lose if Denver is to grab a wild card. The Broncos also lose out to Pittsburgh and NY based on total record in the AFC (Broncos would finish 7-5 here, the Steelers and Jets would finish 8-4).
“We’re just going to try to win those two games”, Bowles said, “and make positive steps going forward”.
The New England Patriots are 12-2 and clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs for the sixth straight season after their 33-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 15.
If Denver splits its remaining games, and the Chiefs, Steelers and Jets all win out, the Broncos miss the playoffs.
He did state that there was a special feeling about the game, because of the position the team was in “It’s a different feeling about the game. We’ve got to get off the field fast and give the ball back to our offense'”.
The Jets can only control what they can control, and beating the Patriots is tough enough as it is. Myself, along with many colleagues, appreciate the painstaking analysis and it’s often a great way to see if someone else independently agrees with you on a player or not. But some bungled clock management, a late Brady-led drive and a 10-second runoff penalty to end the game with NY trying for the tying score short-circuited the Jets’ chances. That is all that can be said though because if they make it there, they would need all the help they can get if they play the way they did on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys, according to the New York Daily News. Bowles believes the team is different than the one the Patriots faced two months ago. “I’d say a lot of that stuff is, in my opinion, not real accurate, so take it with a grain of salt”. However we showed earlier this year that we can play with New England, and we’ve grown as a team.
With their playoff hopes on the line, Bowles has not given any indication that he’s feeling any pressure.
“We just want to take it one at a time”, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. “The biggest game of my career – hopefully I have a long career and have bigger ones to go over so, I don’t worry about that (laughing)”.

Notes & quotes: X-rays of LB David Harris’ lower back were negative, Bowles said. DE Muhammad Wilkerson is fine after leaving the game to be evaluated for a concussion…. Bowles had little reaction to the Odell Beckham Jr.-Josh Norman antics from Sunday’s Panthers-Giants game: “Not my fish to fry”.
