School says Hello Kitty Christmas tree can stay after all
A high school teacher was forced to remove a Christmas tree from her classroom after an administrator told her the tree was inappropriate.

On Tuesday, Gordon said the principal called her into a meeting and informed her the tree would be allowed to stay. He says the tree is appropriate for a school setting.
“We need to be really clear that schools are environments for learning”, Treston says.
Gordon said she told the principal she would take the tree down, which was decorated with fairy lights and Hello Kitty ornaments. “It’s a tree that’s been up in my classroom for years and years”.
Since the school reversed its decision, Gordon said in a Facebook post Tuesday that she was “glad to have the opportunity for an open discussion on this important topic within the school and community”.
The local news media took notice and followed up with Gordon. After 30 years of decorating my classroom for the holidays, I was told today by the building principal that I could no longer put up my little pink tree and to take it down, ‘ she wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.
The tree had no religious symbols on it whatsoever.
The Bangor School Superintendent sent out a statement, which reads in part: “In alignment with national and state standards, the Bangor School Department educates students about culture, traditions, and holidays through curriculum ties in English language arts, music, art, social studies, and world languages”. Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin said the school went too far in ordering its removal.

I would like to clarify and resolve the situation that has brought a great deal of attention to Bangor High School this week while also sharing appreciation to students and staff for their continued sense of goal. “Educating students of the religious freedom upon which our nation was founded is critically important in preparing students to achieve college and career readiness”.
