DOT rolls out tow-riffic new snowclearing machines

It’s the first official full day of winter and the New York State Department of Transportation unveiled new equipment that they say will keep the roads safer all season. That’s why the DOT is showing these things off. They want drivers to be aware of what they’ll see out on the roads once the snow finally comes.

The state bought 62 of the tow plows. They will be used primarily to clear snow from Interstates 390, 490 and 590 and the Lake Ontario State Parkway. The tow plow offers a greater range of motion and better operator control than standard wing plows.

The machines, which cost about $100,000 each, come as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s NY Responds initiative, which allocated $50 million for new winter storm equipment and created a comprehensive new approach for emergency preparedness.

A new apparatus called a tow plow was introduced Tuesday at media events held across the state.

Invented in Kansas City, tow plows have been used by the Missouri Department of Transportation since 2005.
