IMAX Corporation today announced that Lucasfilms’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens scored a record-setting opening weekend in the United Kingdom with £3.4 million from 42 IMAX® theatres.

The previous record, $208.8m (£140m), was set by Jurassic World in June. It pulled in 120.5 million through Friday, its first full day in domestic theaters, the highest single-day ticket sales ever.

The wild card is China, the world’s second-largest movie market, where “Force Awakens” opens January 9.

Already the latest “Star Wars” has beaten “Jurassic World” for the top spot.

In a statement, Walt Disney Studios chairperson Alan Horn commended film director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and the rest of the Lucasfilm crew for performing beyond expectations.

Abrams’ sequel, set 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, features a strong female heroine in Rey, a young scavenger played by newcomer Daisy Ridley. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, and Lupita Nyong’o also star in the film.
