Google developing new messaging app
Facebook once again was the most popular smartphone app of the year among U.S. users, according to data from Nielsen.

Nielsen also says that number is up 26 percent in the last year, which is a little confusing since it was a different app a year ago. The Apple Music app (available on both iOS and Android) can still be used to simply listen to purchased downloads from iTunes without activating the $10/month streaming service.
Regardless, it’s now clear that Facebook’s controversial decision to separate Messenger from its core app is paying off. Gmail app, a free advertising-supported e-mail service provided by Google to smartphone users, lured an average of 75.105 million unique visitors per month.
According to Nielsen Facebook was the most popular app in 2015, in second place was YouTube and in third place was Facebook Messenger.
A recent survey conducted by Nielsen lists the top 10 most popular apps that dominated the mobile space.
In 2015, Facebook apps took three of the top 10 spots, including the No. 1 position, according to a new Nielsen report.
Even though this new Messenger integration will give users a faster and easier way of connecting to businesses, it will still not be possible to hold full conversations directly from the widget. This shows that Google services are preferred over Apple apps. The next in line is YouTube smartphone app. This popular video portal from Google attracted an average of 97.627 million unique users each month during the same period.
In October, the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, revealed that approximately 15 million people were using their service, while only 6,5 million people were actual subscribers.
Separately, smartphone penetration hit 80% in the US, with Android accounting for 52.6% and Apple 42.7%.

The only real surprises in the list are Apple Maps and Music.
