China could hold the key to The Force Awakens’ success. It managed to leapfrog those other two films despite showing on fewer screens.

The current record holder is Avatar, which generated $US2.8 billion worldwide after its December 2009 release. That is until the spinoff movies start rolling in and America rediscovers their love for Lobot and Lando in, Star Wars: Among The Clouds. Disney bought Lucasfilm for US$4 billion in 2012 and spent more than US$200 million to produce The Force Awakens.

The movie, directed by J.J. Abrams, received a 95 per cent score on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
