British troops deploy to Afghan province amid Taliban battle
“Only the governor’s compound and the police headquarters are under government control – the rest have been overrun by the Taliban”, Haji Abdul Qader said.

The Taliban have been getting closer to taking full control of the Sangin district for days, with most government buildings now in Taliban hands.
Britain, which ended combat operations in Afghanistan past year but has about 450 troops there to mentor and support the Afghan army and security forces, said a small number of personnel had been deployed to Helmand in an advisory role.
Air Force Major Adrianna Vorderbruggen, who was commanding the security patrol targeted in Monday’s attack, was the first openly gay US servicewoman killed in action, the Daily Beast news website reported, citing a Department of Defence official.
Afghan Army commandoes and special forces had arrived in Sangin to push a counter-offensive, the Defense Ministry spokesman, Dawlat Waziri, said. During the recent intense fighting in Sangin and Greshk districts, 90 Afghan security forces had been killed, he said.
Detective Joseph Lemm, a 15-year veteran of the NYPD, was one of six American service members killed Monday in Afghanistan when an attacker rammed an explosives-laden motorcycle into their patrol.
But he rejected reports of high military casualties and said the district had not fallen to the Taliban.
Mohammad Jan Rasolyaar, deputy governor of Helmand province, took an unusual step over the weekend by posting an open letter to Ghani on Facebook asking for help.
Military planes dropped food and ammunition to besieged Afghan forces in Sangin after Taliban insurgents captured large swathes of the opium-growing southern district.
“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those affected in this tragic incident, especially during this holiday season”, U.S. Army Brig.
Now, people are starting to believe the Taliban are indeed stronger than the government.
Stuart Gordon, a Helmand expert at the Chatham House think tank, told Britain’s Press Association news agency that Sangin held a special significance to the British as more than 100 British troops had been killed there.
US President Barack Obama in October announced that thousands of US troops would remain in Afghanistan past next year, backpedalling on previous plans to reduce the force and acknowledging that Afghan forces are not ready to stand alone.
It was a somber, snow-flecked morning at this US military hub on Tuesday, a day after six American airmen died in the kind of suicide attack against foreign troops that has become rare in the past year. The death toll claimed by the Taliban does not correlate with that given by Brig. The head of Helmand’s provincial council, Muhammad Kareem Atal, said about 65 percent of Helmand is now under Taliban control.
