Fifth GOP debate a tale of two senators
But it may not matter.

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, after the debate in Las Vegas.
Bush insisted Trump couldn’t “insult his way to the presidency”, and dismissed Trump’s proposal to block all Muslims from entering the country as unsafe and “not serious”. “A little taste of your own medicine”, Mr Bush said at one point.
Bush was more aggressive than in previous debates, and Trump lashed out at him, calling his campaign “a disaster” at one point. “Jeb is only doing this because I committed to run as a Republican last night – so dishonorable”.
The exchange was recorded as the “top social moment” of the debate on Facebook, according to the social media organization.
It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Backed by much of the Republican establishment, the son and brother of former presidents quickly amassed a mountain of campaign cash – more than $100 million – that was supposed to scare off potential rivals and offer an easier path to his party’s presidential nomination. Still, his weak poll numbers haven’t moved.
Mr. Bush termed Mr. Trump a “chaos candidate”, who would make a “chaos president”, and Mr. Trump returned the favour by questioning Mr. Bush’s energy levels and declaring, “under him America would never be great again”.
Literally a few hours after stating he was investigating Ted Cruz over remarks the Texas Tea Party Senator had made during Tuesday night’s GOP debate, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr flip flopped and announced he would not be investigating Cruz. “I always have, and I always will, and I challenge every other Republican candidate to say the same thing or, if not, then to stop making silly assertions that their records and my records on immigration are the same”.
“The question had been raised”.
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has won the fifth presidential debate in Las Vegas. And you’re not being treated fairly?’ Imagine what it’s going to be like dealing with Putin, or dealing with Xi, or dealing with the Islamic terrorism that exists, ‘ Bush said to Trump, name-dropping the leaders of Russian Federation and China. “I’m amazed to hear that from a Republican presidential candidate”.
“If we topple Assad, the result will be ISIS will take over Syria, and it will worsen USA national security interests”, said Cruz, referring to the militant group that claimed responsibility for the attacks in Paris and appears to have inspired the California shooting. “And he’d be a chaos president”. ‘He would not be the commander in chief we need to keep our country safe’.
During a joust with Florida Sen.
Rubio’s tie, for example, was precisely knotted at his throat, at least in comparison to Bush’s more laggardly knot, which telegraphed a certain, now familiar, discomfort with the whole exercise; Cruz’s tightly wound version; and Christie’s, which was visibly off-center.
The only surprise came later in the debate as Bush – Jeb! – got under Trump’s skin.
Trump retaliated by telling Bush his misfiring campaign was a “disaster”, but his lack of experience inadvertently came out in his answer to a question about the US nuclear “triad” – a deterrent of weapons launched from the air, land and sea.
