United Nations Environmental Programme (Unep) Executive Director Achim Steiner has heralded the historic agreement in Le Bourget, Paris.

Just before the 31-page document was finalised, French President Francois Hollande, who hosted the conference, called up Modi to apprise him of the latest status at the talks.
Saturday’s meeting of the 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) came to the first legally binding and universal agreement on climate change in over 20 years of United Nations negotiations. “Looking out to the room I see the reaction is positive, I see no objections”.
Patrick Harvie MSP, finance spokesman for the Scottish Greens, added: “The intentions signalled by the Paris agreement can not be achieved unless fossil fuels are urgently abandoned”.
The delegates rose to their feet and erupted into applause as Fabius banged the gavel.
The climate deal, which commits almost 200 countries for the first time to take steps over time to cut their greenhouse gas pollution, is the crowning achievement of Obama’s environment legacy.
US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said that the Paris Agreement showed that the world was “ready to move towards an innovative era of reductions in heat-trapping emissions that will put us on a path to avoid the worst impacts of climate change”. “The outcome has a bearing with the undertaking of climate change of the human being and our future of sustainable development”, China’s Special Representative on Climate Change Xie Zhenhua said after the adoption of the Paris agreement.
Congress would need to approve any climate change agreement to make it binding for the U.S. In 1997, the U.S. failed to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change.
“This has to happen”, he said of the agreement.
Even though it will take time for enough countries to ratify the pact for it to go into effect, Saturday was a landmark in the fight against climate change. To achieve that goal, governments pledged to stop the rise in heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions “as soon as possible”.
“The Chinese delegation fully supports the joint efforts of the chairman of COP21, negotiators and delegations of other countries”. They emphasize that the agreement states a specific and measurable target.
To keep global temperatures from rising well below 2 C and work to keep it to 1.5 C. The global thermometer has already increased by 1 C.
In addition, a review mechanism has been established whereby every five years, beginning in 2018, Parties will regularly review what is needed in line with science.

“Today, we celebrate”, said European Climate Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete after the nations of the COP21 adopted the agreement.
