“Watch what you say over here, ” Graham warned Trump.
Early in the race, Trump gave out Graham’s cellphone number during a rally in SC. He said that “While we have run a campaign that has made a real difference, I have concluded this is not my time”. With Graham out, influential South Carolina Republicans who have been loyal to him can begin making new choices among the remaining candidates.
He also repeated his call for the U.S.to put more troops on the ground in Iraq and Syria and said he believed his presence in the race elevated the conversation about national security. Graham has not yet endorsed any of the other candidates.
Lindsey Graham suspended his presidential campaign this morning, giving other contenders an early Christmas gift. Lindsey Graham acknowledged two stark realities: attacking billionaire businessman Donald Trump doesn’t work and the establishment lane is still too full.
Another South Carolinian who had backed Graham, former state Commerce Secretary Joe Taylor of Columbia, said he figures he’ll get behind another Republican, though he didn’t know Monday who it would be. ‘At that time no one stepped forward to join me. Lindsey Graham, a Republican, been elected president, he would be the first bachelor elected to the nation’s highest office since James Buchanan, way back in 1856.
Graham is the fourth GOP contender to drop out of the race, following Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. In the Las Vegas debate spin room, after what will have been his last “undercard” performance, Graham said that he would push at least through the New Hampshire primary.
Graham sent a YouTube video link to his supporters to announce the news. It was a lesson he attributed to his upbringing in the bar that his parents owned and to the political friendship between Republican President Ronald Reagan and Democratic Speaker Tip O’Neill.
In a CNN interview, Graham said he “has no intention of endorsing anyone right now” but will consider supporting another GOP presidential candidate.
