Star Wars: The Force Awakens crosses $250M globally after record Friday

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has overtaken Jurassic World to record the biggest ever opening weekend in history, making a whopping US$238 million (A$331 million) at the box office in North America alone. “The Force Awakens” is simultaneously opening around the world just about everywhere but China, where it debuts in January. “To all of the fans around the world who not only came out in Force to make this such an exciting and astronomical debut but who treated this film as their own and helped preserve the experience for their fellow fans by not spoiling it – thank you, we do”.

And while many analysts expected the film to collect $1.5 billion to $2 billion globally, “The Force Awakens” is now predicted to gross $2.6 billion worldwide.

The new “Star Wars” film is the first installment in a decade of the series, which was created by George Lucas in 1977.

As expected, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken the opening weekend domestic box office record.

“With incredible reviews and an excited hardcore fan base that will want to go back over and over again, “Force Awakens” will have long-term playability well into 2016 where it should earn the lion’s share of its potentially record breaking worldwide revenue”, Dergarabedian said.

Audience polling firm CinemaScore gave the new release an A grade, including an A-plus among women and younger audiences.
