Three Oakland Raiders headed to the Pro Bowl
Drafted onto the Oakland Raiders in 1998 as the fourth overall pick, Woodson was an immediate impact playmaker and household name.

Woodson ranks fifth all-time with 65 interceptions and tied for first with Rod Woodson and Darren Sharper with 13 defensive touchdowns.
While at the University of Michigan, Woodson won the coveted Heisman Trophy. In his inaugural season, Woodson caught five interceptions and would continue to be amongst the league’s best defensive backs up until his injury plagued final years in Oakland. As his second term with his first – and ultimately his most recognizable – team ends, he passes the torch to capable donors of the silver in black in Derek Carr, Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper. “I think a lot of other receivers have played really well”.
Amerson has the look of the player most capable of taking over Woodson’s playmaking in the defensive backfield.
For many Chargers fans, the sight would be jarring: Weddle in a Raiders uniform, defending against former longtime teammate Philip Rivers, but would The Beard in pirates’ garb sting any more than the Chargers-Raiders stadium pact announced last February by team owners Dean Spanos and Mark Davis? Woodson says he realized late last month that he couldn’t play another season and wanted to announce his decision before playing his final home game Thursday night against San Diego. “Kind of, but a couple of weeks ago it hit me that this would be it”, Woodson told reporters. That revitalized his career as he had 37 interceptions his first six years with Green Bay, winning the Super Bowl following the 2010 season.
Woodson continued to play safety for the Raiders, and finished third on the team in tackles in 2013. Woodson’s intelligence, athleticism and courage made him a difference maker of the highest order at a hybrid linebacker-coverage position where he was as big a threat to blitz as jump a pass route, and an excellent tackler in the run game.
On April 26, 2006, Woodson signed a seven-year, $52 million contract with the Green Bay Packers. “I’ve been emotional all day, really, so it will be that way Thursday for myself and my family, friends, for Raider Nation”. Fox Sports, ESPN, CBS or NBC should be getting a damn good analyst in the near future, but the game will truly miss one of football’s greatest athletes. All that’s left for us to do is give thanks to Woodson for eighteen years of memories.
The Raiders will never be able to replace a player like Woodson.
