“Sandra Bland’s case shows that we need to do more than #SayHerName”, O’Malley said on Twitter, referring to the campaign that sprang up after her death.

A medical examiner ruled Bland’s death suicide but her family has publicly disputed those findings. We’re begging to answer any questions that they have. Among those considered for indictment were employees of the county jail where Bland died.

The grand jury met for more than eight hours Monday.

The family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against Texas officials and have been given a trial date of January 2017. Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said this week that the officers involved in a recent pilot program to study their use want the cameras back because they foster “the trust we need to build with our community, the two-way respect that we need to push public safety forward in Baltimore”.

The special prosecutor added, “The grand jury found no evidence of homicide”. Unresolved issues include possible charges against the trooper who arrested 28-year-old Sandra Bland.

Cannon Lambert, an attorney for Bland’s family, said the grand jury’s decision is consistent with what the family believes has been an attempt by authorities to cover up what transpired after Bland’s arrest.

In the months leading up to her death, Bland posted several videos about racial tensions and her personal struggle on Facebook.

“The biggest problem for me is the entire process, the secrecy of it all”, Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal said in a news conference with NBC Chicago on Monday.

Sandra Bland’s arrest and death came amid heightened tensions surrounding the police and their dealings with black suspects after a series of high profile cases where suspects were killed by officers or died while in custody. For reasons we’ll never completely understand, she took her own life before she had that money.

Since first pulling over Bland last summer, Texas state trooper Brian Encinia has remained on paid desk duty. “There’s no doubt in my mind that she, like too many African-Americans who die in police custody, would be alive today if she were a white woman”.
