The two producing teams have had been on good terms for years, with Marshall actually being married to Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy; George Lucas even shared some friendly rival banter with Marshall on the red carpet, exclaiming “We’re gonna crush you like a bug!” The dinosaur fantasy flick took in $208.8 million on its opening weekend. “And that just made me go, ‘Oh, yes!'” James Cameron’s Avatar opened to $77 million on the same weekend in 2009 on its way to becoming the top-grossing film of all time with $2.79 billion in global ticket sales, including $760.5 million domestically.
Lucasfilm Another day, another record for “The Force Awakens”. It will open in Greece and India this week, and in China January 9. It broke the record for highest grossing domestic opening night with $57 million, $120.5 million for its first day (which also breaks the record for the highest earning single day), and beat the standing box office record for the Sunday of an opening weekend with $61 million.
The latest film returns to “a galaxy far, far away” some 30 years on from the action of 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
Harrison Ford’s payday for his role as Han Solo in the The Force Awakens was massive, far outpacing the other actors in the new installment of the franchise.
