Charles Woodson to retire after 18th season
He didn’t see any defensive snaps the next week, then was waived and came to Oakland. Rather than taking the extended victory lap that some athletes do, Woodson made his decision quietly and announced it with just one home date left in the season – giving the fans one last chance to appreciate him and giving him one last chance to appreciate them. “I’ve been emotional all day, so it will be that way Thursday for Raider Nation”, Woodson said, according to NBCSports.com. “You know this is a great, great country that we live in to be able to play this great game”, Woodson said to reporters when asked what he’ll miss the most.

Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson is retiring after 18 seasons. He played for the Raiders up until 2005, before he went to Green Bay in 2006.
Woodson informed the media that various Raiders teammates have attempted to convince him to stick around for another year, but he simply could not make that promise.
Woodson’s final game will be on January 3rd, when the Raiders close out the season at Kansas City.
His eight takeaways (five interceptions and three fumble recoveries) are tied for second in the National Football League, and his 82 tackles are second on the team.
“I didn’t say anything”, Woodson said, “but it’s a seniority thing, man. It doesn’t work around here”.
“I’ve taken this time to knock off some of the rust”, Quarless said, per Demovsky. But mentally, it’s not there.
No doubt, it’ll be an emotional time for Woodson on Christmas Eve night when he plays for the final time at the Oakland Coliseum.
The NFL listed the suspension as being for “multiple violations of safety-related playing rules” and NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks ruled Beckham put opponents at unnecessary risk of injury in a letter to the Giants receiver. “It was really fun coming back here and playing”.
It will be an emotional day for all of us, indeed.
After winning the Heisman Trophy as a junior at MI in 1997, Woodson was drafted No. 4 overall by the Raiders in 1998. He earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors as well as four Pro Bowl nods and an All-Pro selection during his initial run in Oakland. Murray needs 44 yards to reach 1000 yards in his first full season as the Raiders’ starting running back.

While the Raiders’ future appears promising, Woodson’s guidance in the locker room has surely helped develop a slew of talented draft picks from the last several seasons. But Woodson continued to defy that logic throughout the years, even as he reinvented himself and found other ways to be just as effective as he was as a young, 22-year-old upstart with the Raiders way back in 1998.
