Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already taken a staggering €2,890,539 in 4 days at the combined Northern Irish and Republic of Ireland box office, with a further €412,961 yesterday bringing the cumulative first five days to €3,303,500. Now, the flick is likely to hold the top spot going into the Christmas weekend, but with four new flicks also opening Christmas Day the competition could be fierce. Fandango, the West L.A. company that sells movie tickets online, announced Monday that it sold more than 37 percent of the estimated $247 million in tickets for the movie’s USA opening.

The highly anticipated seventh instalment of the space saga has blazed a record-setting trail, taking the prize for highest-grossing domestic opening night with $57m and biggest domestic single-day sales Friday with $120.5m.

The previous record, $208.8m (£140m), was set by Jurassic World in June. Because of the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney, I was hesitant to be too excited for “The Force Awakens”, despite director J.J. Abrams’ success with the “Star Trek” franchise and my excitement to enter the “Star Wars” world once again.

The film takes place about 30 years after the “Return of The Jedi” and the First Order has risen to take over the work the Galactic Empire started. Abrams, as well as the film’s actors Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn) and Daisy Ridley (Rey). Harrison Ford fits nicely into the role of an older Han Solo as does Carrie Fisher with her part of a mature Leia Organa and Mark Hamill briefly as a stoic Luke Skywalker.
