The United hierarchy are reportedly considering Van Gaal’s position at Old Trafford amid a six-game winless streak, headlined by three consecutive defeats after Saturday’s shock 2-1 loss at home to Norwich City.
But Hughes, who won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup three times in his two spells at United, suggested there is no guarantee the team will recapture their former glories soon.
Although United could stomach another year out of the Champions League in a financial sense, the damage to the club’s standing in the game would be hit if they were not in Europe’s top club competition next season.
Mourinho was keen on taking the United job when Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, but the Scot chose David Moyes as his successor instead.
Former Manchester United assistant manager Steve Round says Louis van Gaal deserves a chance to prove his tactics can work at Old Trafford.
Manchester United could see the departure of two key players if manager Louis van Gaal is not sacked, according to The Times. “It doesn’t matter what you have done in the game previously – and his [Van Gaal’s] record as a top-line manager is exceptional – you have to win football matches”.
And: Louis van Gaal’s future was not discussed by Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at a meeting in London today.
Sunday saw Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola confirm his decision to to leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season, with Carlo Ancelotti his replacement.
“I’m not seeing that with Manchester United at the moment and that’s the really disappointing thing”.
“They need to put faith in a man who has won trophies in every major European country”.

Although many critics have been quick to point the finger at Van Gaal, his compatriot Van der Gouw believes United have become a victim of the narrowing gap between the biggest and smallest clubs in the Premier League.
