Dalene Bowden, who worked at Irving Middle School in Pocatello, Idaho, said she offered to pay the $1.70 (£1.14) lunch charge for the girl, but her supervisor refused the offer. “I truly loved my job and I can’t say I wouldn’t do it again”.
Bowden said she offered to pay for the meal, which was less than $2.
“The reason for your termination is due to your theft-stealing [of] school district or another’s property and inaccurate transactions when ordering, receiving and serving food”, Susan Petit, the district’s director of human resources, wrote to Bowden in a termination letter.
Meanwhile, an online petition in her favor continues to grow.
“So, I handed her the food and said, ‘Here”.
The school is supposed to notify parents once their child’s lunch bill reaches the limit. “We’ll take care of it in a minute”, Bowden said.
“He said I was on permanent leave – until he called me, I should not call them”. But the child was not deprived of a lunch.
A few days later, she was terminated buy email.
Interim Superintendent Douglas Howell said the district makes sure that economically disadvantaged students receive free or reduced-price lunches.
“If the kids can’t pay, and they’re over their limit, the workers take their tray away and dump it right there in the line”, Bowden said.
“I got fired for having a heart, please help me fight back”, writes the Idaho school lunch lady on her Facebook page.
