For a few awkward moments the two women stood side by side, in front of a TV audience of millions from around the world, before Harvey explained that he read the card naming the victor and runner-up in the wrong order.

But that was only after he deleted an original message that had spelled both countries’ names incorrectly.

Harveytook to Twitter to say: “I’d like to apologise wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake”.

The Miss Universe organization issued a statement on Sunday night for the mix-up without placing blame on any particular individual. The caption references the fact that Miss Colombia, Paulina Vega, won the 2014 Miss Universe title.
