Star Wars ‘The Force Awakens’ smashes opening-night records in North America
The projections from Walt Disney Co late Friday indicated the film could eclipse the $208.8 million record set by dinosaur adventure film “Jurassic World” in June.

Because “The Force Awakens” is entering uncharted box office territory, typical moviegoing patterns make it hard to forecast where the film’s opening weekend tally may wind up.
The seventh Star Wars movie The Force Awakens will be officially released this weekend, but preview showings have already broken records. After all, there were long lines for “Star Wars” at 5:15 a.m. outside of the Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
Fans flocked to theaters in the early hours of the morning to catch a first glimpse of the seventh film in the highly anticipated Star Wars saga. The Force Awakens shattered its first record with advanced ticket sales, reportedly selling eight times as many tickets than the previous record holder, The Hunger Games, to the tune of million. The film will be in a total of 4,134 locations on Friday – a record for a December opening.
It’s setting records overseas, too, including the biggest single day ever in the United Kingdom with an estimated $14.4 million on Thursday.
Imax and 3-D screenings are helping to propel the record gross.
Directed by JJ Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens returns to “a galaxy far, far away” some 30 years on from the action of 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Critics have hailed it as a fan-friendly return to form for the franchise; the American Film Institute listed it among its top 10 films of the year.
“The potential for The Force Awakens to ultimately break into the $2 billion club worldwide is certainly in the realm of possibility”, Dergarabedian said.
Such a positive reaction for “The Force Awakens” may attract the kind of repeat viewings that made James Cameron’s “Avatar” and “Titanic” the highest grossing films of all time.
“The Force Awakens” centers on a scenario in which both the Resistance and the menacing First Order are searching for hero Luke Skywalker, who has mysteriously vanished.
President Barack Obama began his year-end press conference Friday by letting reporters know their meeting wouldn’t be the most important event taking place Friday.

After fielding questions, Obama concluded the press conference: “OK everybody, I got to get to ‘Star Wars'”.
