The deal itself required that all countries that take part in the agreement reduce their greenhouse gas emissions “as soon as possible”, continuing those reductions as the century continues to progress.

“The Paris Agreement is a monumental triumph for people and our planet”, Ban said in a tweet, immediately following the adoption of the new Paris Agreement.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “The Paris climate change agreement is historic in its ambition to take action against the worldwide threat of global warming. The outcome has a real bearing on human beings’ undertakings in climate change and our future of sustainable development”. The agreement also requires a flow of $US100 billion a year from developed countries to developing countries by 2020. While the deal was widely hailed by environmental campaigners and diplomats alike today, critics such as former NASA scientist James Hansen have called the agreement “a fraud”.
