Olympic ski champion Shiffrin heading home for knee injury
Mikaela Shiffrin has revealed that she suffered knee ligament damage and bone bruising after crashing while practicing ahead of the FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom event in Are on Saturday.

“She basically flipped over into the net”, Albrecht told the AP in describing how the injury occurred. “She’s in the hospital waiting for the MRI which will probably take a while”.
The U.S. Ski Team did not immediately issue a statement on Shiffrin’s status, as per team policy to await full injury details.
The 20-year-old won back-to-back slalom races in her home state last month. She also missed the first opportunity of the season for a win in giant slalom at the race held in Sheldon, Austria in October, due to a broken left ankle.
The American specializes in the speed events of downhill and super-G and now has four giant slalom victories to her name – with two of them coming in Are.
Overall World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn also sat out, as she no longer races slalom.
“I hope both of them are OK”, Vonn said.
With little sun at the resort located near the Arctic Circle, artificial lights were turned on to enable skiers to see the course. “I was hoping to be in the top three, but at the same time I knew that if I could arc and ski aggressively that I could win, because I’ve done it here before”.
Vonn’s lead over Brem was a slender three hundredths of a second at the final interval.
“When I was a kid I always trained under the lights after school”, Vonn said.
She will also miss Sunday’s slalom, and it’s unclear if she’ll be able to return in time for a giant slalom in Courchevel, France, next weekend.
Vonn went on to win in dominant fashion, her first GS win since January of 2013 and only the fourth of her career.
