CDC: Three Oklahomans sick with E.coli, possibly linked to Chipotle
Health officials have been unable to trace the E. coli cases to a particular ingredient.

Because it is not known if these infections are related to the larger, previously reported outbreak of STEC O26 infections, these illnesses are not being included in the case count for that outbreak. All five individuals reported eating at the burrito chain the week before illness started.
“The new news flow shows the impact continuing and more importantly a management team that seems to be scrambling for answers”, Ivankoe writes.
The FDA said on Tuesday the evidence available suggests that a common meal item or ingredient served at Chipotle’s restaurants in several states is a likely source of both the outbreaks.
“The preliminary test that was done on the sample was a polymerase chain reaction test, which is commonly used to rapidly screen for the presence of the DNA of a bacteria, in this case E. coli O157:H7”, according to the FDA.
Chipotle customer Sara Matthews says she loves the restaurant because she believes the food is fresher than other fast food options but she still has her concerns.
On Monday the Journal-World contacted managers at the three Chipotle restaurants in Lawrence, and all said they had not had any reports of customers getting sick from eating E. coli-contaminated food.
The company said it has completed a comprehensive review of its food safety programs focused on each of its ingredients, and the process of implementing related changes has already begun. “We are confident that we can achieve a level of food safety risk that is near zero”.
The most recent illness in this outbreak reported to CDC started on November 3, the federal agency said. The investigations are ongoing.
There was also a salmonella outbreak this year, followed by an outbreak of the norovirus. While the company is expecting a decline of 8% to 11%, JPMorgan expects same-store sales to fall by as much as 13%. The slide could extend even longer, if history is any indication.
At the same time, however, the CDC had some bad news.
Most illnesses were reported from the western United States.

“The Chipotle foodborne illness case will now be studied by restaurant operators, financial professionals, and PR officials for years if not decades to come”, he said.
