SpaceX rocket makes historic landing
The concept of landing a rocket on an ocean platform has been around for decades but SpaceX’s earlier attempts failed repeatedly forcing the space agency to limit its expectation at 50% on December 21 when its Falcon 9 rocket successfully accomplished the target of re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere and softlanding on a sea-pad with accuracy. This video, which SpaceX released Tuesday, shows the vertical landing from the vantage point of a helicopter hovering nearby.

If SpaceX and other private companies continue to bring back boosters, industry experts say re-usable rockets could become the norm, drastically changing the economics of flying to outer space.
“Welcome back, baby!” Musk wrote in a tweet after the successful landing. About two minutes into the flight, the rocket’s first-stage separated cleanly from the second stage and began a controlled descent back to Earth.
Miriam Kramer contributed reporting. That effort was thwarted when the fins meant to guide the rocket’s descent stopped working, and it crashed into the drone ship it was meant to land on. After that incident, SpaceX took a six-month hiatus from launches and rolled out the upgraded Falcon 9, which has increased thrust, a much larger upper stage engine bell, and a deep cryo oxidizer.
It was the company’s first launch since its rocket carrying cargo to the International Space Station exploded June 28. With companies such as Space X, Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance being able to reuse rockets the possibilities for space tourism and opening up next frontier Mars are quite incredible. The company has been trying to land the first stage successfully to try to make space flight cheaper and more attainable to anyone interested. Blue Origin landed a rocket last month in Texas, but that was during a test flight, not an actual mission.

The landing mission is one of the most innovative projects the 15-person company has ever been a part of. “Following the commercial model, a rapidly reusable space launch vehicle could reduce the cost of traveling to space by a hundredfold”.
