The announcement came in the wake of a case in the Bombay High Court that raised concern about the increasing incidents of drunken driving and lack of stringent penal provisions.
A day ago, we had reported that the State Government is studying Salman Khan’s acquittal verdict to consider appealing against the order in Supreme Court and now, we have learned that the Maharashtra Government has finally taken a call.
On December 21, the Bench had sought to know what action the State government proposed to take against personnel found guilty of dereliction of duty in such cases and also its stand on action to be taken as regards license of the person found driving under influence of liquor.
The SLP would be filed in due course, Vagyani said during the hearing of a public interest litigation filed by senior journalist Nikhil Wagle seeking compensation from Khan for victims of the 2002 hit-and-run mishap.
The actor has deposited a compensation for the families of the victims as directed by court, but Wagle’s petition is being heard as the court expanded its scope to include enhancement of punishment in accident cases.
On May 6, 2015, the Mumbai sessions court convicted the Bollywood star for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment of 5 years and a fine of Rs 25,000. Firstly, they wanted to know if there were specific guidelines followed by the investigating agencies while collecting blood samples and other evidence from crime scene.
However, there are no rules that provide for a time frame within which the blood samples are to be tested. The matter has been posted for hearing in January.
