The army denies killing hundreds of people but has not given any casualty figures.
The Nigerian senate has set up an inquiry into the deaths of civilians while army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman had said there had been “loss of lives as a result of the Shia group members blocking roads and not allowing other passer-by to go about their lawful businesses and activities”.
But Human Rights Watch says there has been no “credible information” that any soldiers were injured or killed.
Witnesses who were at the Hussainniyah mosque and religious center said that dozens of soldiers took up position at the mosque at around midday on December 12, 2015, at least an hour before the army chief of staff was due to pass by. Video footage shot by sect members and posted on YouTube appears to show soldiers calmly setting up before the shootings began.
They, however, want President Muhammadu Buhari to end human right abuses in the Nigerian military.
The group’s leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky, who started Nigeria’s Shiite movement 37 years ago, was wounded and is among scores detained.
The Shiites Islamic sect, on Saturday, blasted the Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, for allegedly making indicting pronouncements against the sect following the recent clash between the sect members and the Nigerian army in Zaria.
Another 191 suspects have been charged with offences including obstruction of highways, possession of weapons and attacking security agents, he said.
Ibrahim Musa, the movement’s spokesman, said in a statement two of its members died in detention on Sunday.
