Alejandro Inarritu’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning “Birdman”, the frontier epic “The Revenant”, took four nominations, including best picture, drama, and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.
Michael Shannon snagged a nomination for the best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture.
Best Supporting Actor puzzler: No one gets in for “Spotlight” but Idris Elba gets in for a good but not nomination-worthy turn in the unfortunately generic “Beasts of No Nation”.
Lady Gaga was thrilled with her nomination as best actress in a limited series for her performance in American Horror Story: Hotel.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which bestows the Golden Globes, exhibited a lack of sentiment for AMC’s “Mad Men”, which completed its stellar run last season. But true to its, shall we say, idiosyncratic reputation, the HFPA also prompted widespread headscratching by recognizing a number of shows that, while generally well-received, were not considered awards contenders. Rampling received best actress honors for her performance at the Berlin International Film Festival and was named best actress last week by the Boston and Los Angeles Film Critics. Surging was Adam McKay’s finance farce “The Big Short”, which earned four nominations, including best picture, comedy.
On Thursday, the streaming TV website picked up a best TV comedy nomination for its original series Casual. I know they are true devotees of the cinema and I can tell every time I speak with one of them how much they care about what they do.
Michael Fassbender, best actor nominee for “Steve Jobs”: “This film, and working with Danny Boyle and our unbelievable cast, has been one of the most creative and wonderful experiences of my professional life”. For more than 60 years, TODAY has provided a daily live broadcast of the latest in domestic and worldwide news, weather reports, and interviews with newsmakers from the worlds of politics, business, media, entertainment and sports.
Globes’ defiance: In a year that has seen studios dubiously advocating that lead roles (including Vikander in “The Danish Girl”, Rooney Mara in “Carol”) be shoehorned into supporting categories, the Globes mostly did the right thing and positioned the performances correctly.
It will compete with blockbuster area journey “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, impressed by the story of the lady who designed the family Miracle Mop. The reason you have to keep all three in perspective is that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences seem to change their minds-in terms of votes-between the Globes, the SAG Awards, and the Oscars.
After being surprisingly overlooked at the SAG Awards nomination ceremony earlier this week, Empire and it’s brightest star Taraji P. Henson both managed to score a nomination.
The nominees for best screenplay are Steve Jobs, Spotlight, The Hateful Eight, Room, and The Big Short. They did manage to crown a new starlet in Alicia Vikander, nominated for both “The Danish Girl” and “Ex Machina”.
Adds “Inside Out” director Pete Docter, whose movie made the Golden Globes animated feature cut: “There’s no clear front-runner and that makes it interesting”.

Mad Max: Fury Road, aside from its best drama nomination, also earned a nod for director George Miller – his first Globe nomination ever.
