The Lok Sabha today adjourned sine die while the Rajya Sabha was adjourned up to 1 pm amidst continuous uproar created by Congress members.
After senior Congress leaders, Mallikarjun Kharge, Jyotiraditya Scindia and K C Venugopal wrote to the Speaker protesting against her remarks and later met her, she expunged her own remarks.
On Tuesday, the Speaker had made some remarks at protesting Congress members after Biju Janata Dal MP Baijayant Panda pleaded with her to quieten them as he was raising a matter of “national interest”.
“I did not take name of (any) party…” This is one of the rare occasions that the Chair had to expunge his/her own remarks.
Wondering what would happen tomorrow, Kharge said the Speaker’s remarks yesterday were unfortunate and it hurt them.
She twice threatened to take action against the Congress members who were disrupting the House by asking officials to note down their names. “I am sorry”, even as some murmurs of disapproval could be heard from the Treasury benches.
In her remarks before adjourning the house, the Speaker urged the members to ensure that there was maximum discussion and legislative work and minimum disruption.
As soon as the House assembled, Congress MPs came to the well shouting slogans against the government and demanded finance minister Arun Jaitley’s resignation over alleged irregularities in Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). Chandy had recently written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing displeasure at the way central ministers “misled” Parliament over his omission from the list of invitees for the unveiling of a statue of former chief minister R Sankar.

Dissatisfied with the Speaker’s response when Congress members began to protest, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said such actions by the Opposition was not allowed in the House.
