There was no game-ending brawl in Marlins Park this year, but for a second consecutive season, the Miami Beach Bowl delivered a highly entertaining shootout.
USF head coach Willie Taggart was a star quarterback and head coach at Western Kentucky who actually recruited and taught the quarterback who beat them how to play. Senior quarterback, Brandon Doughty’s pass was intercepted by Nigel Harris on the USF 30 yard line, which he returned to the WKU 47.
Western Kentucky comes in with the 25th overall ranking based on the Associated Press, the 11-2 mark for the Hilltoppers was certainly a great season. As we’ve all come to learn, a defense can only keep a lid on Western Kentucky’s offense and its playmakers for so long, though.
The over is 6-1 in Hilltoppers last 7 vs. a team with a winning record and is 6-1 in Hilltoppers last 7 games on grass while going 6-1 in Hilltoppers last 7 games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game. Norris hauled in five passes for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Meanwhile, first-year starting quarterback Quinton Flowers (Miami) has blossomed into a dual-threat nightmare for defenses in his sophomore campaign.
“There was a time when people thought it was over and we were out of it, then, there we were, back in the game, ” Jozwiak said. The first career interception for the junior was the first takeaway of the game, and the Bulls took advantage of it. Utah State’s run game wasn’t overpowering, but did average almost 170 yards per game. The Bulls struggled to pass the ball in the first half but built an early 14-0 lead, with the help of Rodney Adams’ 34-yard touchdown run. The Miami native has thrown for 21 touchdowns and rushed for 10 more, plus will undoubtedly be bolstered by getting to play a game in his hometown. Taylor culminated 2015 tied with Baylor wide receiver and Biletnikoff victor Corey Coleman, with 1,363 receiving yards, good for fourth in the nation.
The Hilltoppers went three-and-out on the next drive, and the speedy Flowers quickly went back to work. The Bulls 597 yards of offense was the programs most ever against an FBS opponent, topped only by 745 against Florida A&M in 2011.
The second half was a different story. But against the Hilltoppers, Nadelman missed from 43 and 54 yards. After holding WKU to a three-and-out possession, Flowers led USF 75 yards in six plays, capped by his 8-yard scoring keeper. The unit forced a following three-and-out, their fourth of the game, which allowed the offense to catch fire. But Doughty and WKU scored 28 points in the decisive third quarter to take the lead and they never looked back. The trick play closed the gap to 24-21 and momentum began to shift once again, this time in favor of USF. The super-prolific senior enters his college finale with 12,394 yards, 991 completions and 108 touchdown passes.
That success from late in the second quarter carried over into the second half for WKU.
USF went on to score 14 unanswered points to close the gap in the second annual Miami Beach Bowl. Still no score. WKU takes over at its own 21.
With the lead, and time on their side, another Hilltopper player decided to make a big play.
