After Adelson Buys Vegas Paper, Editor Quits
Hengel didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Being the Chairman of Las Vegas Sands, one of the world’s biggest gambling operators, and a staunch supporter of the Republican Party, Sheldon Adelson is no stranger to the U.S. media scene.
A “message from the new owners about the future of the Las Vegas Review-Journal”, due for publication on the front page on Wednesday, also announces Hengel’s departure, along with “other R-J employees”.
Among them, photographer Kevin Cannon and reporter Bethany Barnes confirmed their postings to The Associated Press. He said that his resignation would probably be considered good news by the new owners and that his decision is in his best interest and that of his family.
Adelson’s spokesman for the Las Vegas Sands, Ron Reese, declined to comment, as did Gonzalez and longtime Review-Journal attorney Mark Hinueber, who said he could not say anything about whether he or other employees were still employed by the paper.
The publisher of the CT paper is Michael Schroeder, who also happens to be the manager of a DE company formed to facilitate the purchase of the Review-Journal for the Adelsons.
Coincidentally, he did so mere days after it was revealed that the new owners of the paper were members of conservative mega-donor Sheldon Adelson’s family. Gatehouse Media LLC, the former owner’s subsidiary, would keep on managing the newspaper.
The Adelsons said they postponed making public their involvement to avoid distracting from the December 15 Republican presidential debate held at The Venetian, Adelson’s flagship casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.
Hengel, the Review-Journal’s editor, said he made the decision not to publish any of it, sent the research to publisher Jason Taylor and never heard more. “This journalism will be supported by new investments in services such as enhanced fact-checking and a Reader Advocate or Ombudsperson to respond to reader concerns”.

“We pledge to publish a newspaper that is fair, unbiased and accurate”, the statement says. “We regard ourselves as stewards of this essential community institution, and we promise that the Review-Journal will serve the people of Las Vegas for many years to come”, the statement read.
