Alphabet, the parent company of Google is gearing up to compete with companies like Facebook in making “intelligent” messaging apps.

Messaging apps are among the most popular mobile apps in the world, but as the Journal notes, Google’s services, Hangouts and Messenger, lag behind Facebook Messenger.
Google is working on a new messaging app that will employ artificial intelligence to bring some of the company’s data smarts to a chat bot service in the software, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Google’s strength is its ability to answer questions, whether it’s through a search engine or a virtual assistant, and flexing that muscle to popularize a messaging app would make sense for the company. The story also said that Google’s motivation was to capture messaging app market share lost to Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and WeChat.
There’s no word when Google plans to unveil its new messaging service or roll out the phone-based login feature to more users.
It’s unclear when Google is targeting to launch the product or whether it will be successful, the Journal said, citing disappointments such as Hangouts and Google Messenger.
Keep in mind that consumers can already choose from dozens of smaller messaging services.
In addition to come up with autonomous cars, Google is also busy in developing a unique messaging that employs artificial intelligence.
Users typically become a member of a messaging service due to knowing who other users are.

Instead of typing a query into Google’s search engine, users will send questions as text messages, to which chatbots will respond. The Slack news was heavily developer-focused, with a new app directory, new AWS Lambda blueprints for building apps in the service, and a new open source framework called Botkit that makes it easier to build bots in Slack.

Messaging and chat are important to Google in their own right, but the rise of chatbots is another potential threat to Google.
