I’m leaving this position today, but will remain a loyal soldier of my motherland, ‘ Garibashvili said in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday.

Garibashvili didn’t immediately specify the reason behind his resignation as he made the announcement, but offered some self-praise, saying that “we have returned freedom and dignity to our citizens”.
Stepping down… Now ex-Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili.
Garibashvili presented his government’s 3-year Progress Report only two days ago and enjoyed his team’s success on Georgia’s visa liberalization with the European Union last week.
He was a political unknown before former prime minister and billionaire tycoon Bidzina Ivanishvili named him interior minister in October 2012. “It was always an opportunity to serve my country and our people”, Garibashvili said.
In contrast, support for Mr Saakashvili’s National Movement has risen and some recent polls indicated that it has caught up with the Georgian Dream or even overtaken it in popularity.
“This reshuffle is linked to the upcoming parliamentary election”.
The opposition blames Garibashvili’s government for mounting economic woes in the former Soviet republic of 3.7 million, which is the subject of geopolitical rivalry between Russian Federation and the West. He remains an acting prime minister and other members of the cabinet also continue performing their duties before the new prime minister and the cabinet is confirmed by the Parliament.
