Costco E. coli outbreak appears to be over
Yesterday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that it is investigating the chain for yet another outbreak of E. coli which sickened five people across three states.

The development is the latest bad news for Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., which saw its sales plummet after the emergence of the larger E. coli outbreak that has sickened 53 people in nine states.
For this reason, the CDC said it is not including these new cases as part of the first outbreak. None of those sickened, after eating at Chipotle restaurants in Kansas and Oklahoma, was hospitalized and all showed symptoms from November 18, 2015, to November 26, 2015.
A similar outbreak of E. coli illnesses linked to Taco Bell restaurants in 2006 sent same-store sales into negative territory for five straight quarters, Quartz reports.
Chipotle officials have taken action to enhance the company’s food safety program and hired Seattle-based IEH Laboratories to help improve the company’s safety practices, according to a Chipotle press release.
David Tarantino of Baird Equity Research said the additional E. coli cases will pose additional headwinds on demand.
“We believe they are related, and are working with the CDC and FDA while they investigate, ” Arnold said.
“In addition, news of the separate E.coli strand should undoubtedly prolong the turnaround as the company planned to intensify marketing efforts to regain brand trust once the CDC closed the investigation, which is still ongoing”, Charles wrote.
On this newly reported case of E. coli outbreak, analyst at JP Morgan John Ivankoe has downgraded Chipotle stock to Neutral and slashed its price target from $630 to $555. Researchers are conducting whole-genome sequencing to determine whether the more recent strain is genetically related to the larger outbreak strain, and investigations are underway to identify contaminated products.
Chris Arnold, a spokesman for Chipotle, told ABC News in a statement, “We have indicated before that we expected that we may see additional cases stemming from this”.
“While it is never possible to completely eliminate all risk, this program eliminates or mitigates risk to a level near zero, ” he said earlier this month. Saleh reiterated his buy rating on Chipotle and thinks the stock could rebound to $664.
It doesn’t help that you literally can’t spell the word Chipotle without the letters E C O L and I.

Meantime, Chipotle’s stock continues to react negatively. Oches added that Chipotle should be transparent about its safety precautions to reassure customers that this doesn’t happen again.
