The Walt Disney Co.’s estimate on Friday easily surpassed the previous Thursday night record of $43.5 million by 2011’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”.
Disney, which bought the rights to the “Star Wars” franchise from its creator George Lucas for $4 billion in 2012, has built up the hype around “The Force Awakens”, rolling out a well-orchestrated marketing campaign that has left fans wanting more.
The wild card is China, the world’s second-largest movie market, where “Force Awakens” opens January 9.
Carrie Fisher loved working with JJ Abrams because he is such a “Star Wars” fan. Theaters added showtimes to meet demand.

The global rollout for the film, made for about $200 million, has already brought in an estimated total of $72.7 million since opening in a handful of countries Wednesday.
Expected to blast through records all weekend, the Friday numbers are in for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
It’s setting records overseas, too, including the biggest single day ever in the United Kingdom with an estimated $14.4 million on Thursday.
The latest film in the iconic franchise has smashed box office records in the U.S. and Canada after pulling in $57million (£38m) on its first night.
3-D and Imax screenings are helping to propel the record gross.
Early reviews of the movie have given it a big thumbs-up and three more instalments are due in the coming years.
The teaser trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was released on YouTube on November 28, 2014.
Star Wars 7 begins 30 years after the events of The Return Of Jedi and introduces new characters to carry forward the story of the Force, the Jedi and Empire.
Such a positive reaction for “The Force Awakens” may attract the kind of repeat viewings that made James Cameron’s “Avatar” and “Titanic” the highest grossing films of all time.
