Whoops: Washington state accidentally released 3200 inmates
More than 3,200 U.S. prisoners have been released early because of a software glitch. The county jail good behavior ruling, which applied to only some of the overall prison population, was not previously included in sentence reductions.

“That this problem was allowed to continue for 13 years is deeply disappointing to me, totally unacceptable and, frankly, maddening”, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said at a press conference.
A software fix to calculating release dates should be in place by January 7, officials said.
The computer program overlooked the exemption and misapplied the credits, Inslee’s office said in a statement. Corrections Secretary Dan Pacholke, who took over the department in October, said he learned of the early releases the previous day.
The calculation error was first brought to the attention of corrections officials in 2012. However, the coding fix was repeatedly delayed, and the governor says he didnt learn of the issue until last week, when corrections officials notified his staff. For reasons we still dont yet fully understand, that fix never happened, Brown said. A spokesperson from the governor’s office said that so far, 5 prisoners have been brought back to prison to serve the remainder of their sentences.
The average amount of time those inmates was released early is 49 days, although in one case an inmate was released 600 days early, and others only got out a few days before they should have. The number of inmates freed could go as high as 3,200. In accordance with Supreme Court precedent, most of the offenders who were released early will be given with day for day credit for their time in the community. According to the Seattle Times, a Supreme Court ruling mandated that good time credits should be used to reduce prison terms.
“I’ve ordered immediate action to fix 13-year-old sentencing errors discovered at state prisons”, Gov. Jay Inslee tweeted on Tuesday.
According to the Department of Corrections, seven individuals have been identified.
The offender will be rewarded for their good behavior outside of prison and depending on the time left on their sentences, some may be eligible for work release.
Inslee has retained two former federal prosecutors to conduct an internal investigation.

“The agency should be held accountable for this breach”, he said.
