In the past, AMD has used GlobalFoundries for most of its manufacturing, so the order is a huge win for Samsung.

The production of “Greenland” GPUs, at least, will kick off in the second quarter of 2016; it isn’t clear whether the production of “Zen” CPUs will start during that same time period, as the source states only that Zen production will begin “right after” Greenland. One factory calls the process 14nm while later simply tells you that their transistor length is 16nm and both are fairly similar in size. Currently, all AMD chips are manufactured by Abu-Dhabi-owned company Global Foundries. Selling its stake in the fab company meant that AMD could use other facilities to manufacture its chips, such as TSMC.

Samsung has already showcased the capabilities of 14nm technology in its flagships smartphones, being more powerful and energy efficient at the same time.

The South Korean giant has manufactures chips for some famous names like Apple and Nvidia, AMD’s biggest competitor.

Neither AMD or Samsung has commented on this particular rumour, which obviously isn’t surprising at this point.

As for Samsung, the company is seeing a decline in sales in its smartphone division. With Samsung and Global Foundries both producing 14 nanometer technology there will be no issues for AMD regarding in-stable supplies. Meanwhile, Intel’s 10nm chips aren’t slated to arrive until 2017.
